On seeing this mural last month elements of it reminded me of a discussion we had a year or two back about what they do on Christmas, how they celebrate, presents etc. The topic came up I think partially because, as like me, they live a long way from family and old friends. What they said has inspired me ever since. They share the Christmas vibe where it probably matters most. Great to see. A really nice vid worth the watch.

I assume most people seeing this blog won't be in Belgium to make it to the show these two works are in. On the off chance that you are, and happen to be going, sorry to wreck any surprises!
The pieces are both approximately 60cm x 20cm.
The orange sections of the top piece had to be re-cut. I had the freshly cut originals in a ratty old envelope which, to my surprise, was subsequently used to start a wood heater with!

I was taking a photo of this bottom piece the other day and was thinking that a lot of Aussies have tended to over generalize about what European style is. In short, It's super diverse.
For the Australians that haven't come across him, Mister is a Dutch writer from CFH crew. CFH is comprised mainly of many of the Netherlands active stylists that began in the '80s. I find a lot of similarity in the Dutch and Aussie writer mentality and scenes, particularly a lot of parallels can be made between Amsterdam and Melbourne.
Mister has the ability to mix it up on call. He's got style, and burns on brick and steel.

Check the illusion of a whiteish outline on the green squares.
Drips of another awkward kind.
The fog didn't lift all day, probably metaphorically as well. The wall got increasingly wet and I opted for the quick version. 4 hours at the wall, as friends would attest, is pretty fast for me.

I managed to use up some of my shelf of pinks and satisfy my penchant for psychedelic rock poster color schemes. Didn't have the back ground paint to cover what was underneath but all in all, can't complain.

A city-guide TV show came to film in Antwerpen this week. They filmed artists, Ephameron, Steve Locatelli, fashion designer Kid Vanilla, MC Nag, myself and Im guessing others. So I ventured out for my first piece for a while. I painted a lot of it with the left and saved my less than flexible right hand for it's first workout on the outlining of this silver. I'm looking forward to getting into a serious piece asap.

So, with the injury of my right hand, I decided to give left-handed drawing and painting a try. The sketching proved more difficult. These flix show a bit of the progression. The physicality of piecing and looking just ahead of your line made for less of a challenge than making my already quite small outlines on paper.

With the left hand unable to fall into habits, lines had to be considered actions, and as with painting I had to look slightly ahead of the line I was drawing for accuracy. I think the swapping over to the other side of the body can have an interesting effect creatively. A friend said that apparently Frazetta had to change to his other hand and his work improved! Give it a crack!

The last photo here of the beginnings of an 'N' is with my left and a partially moveable right.

Normally, these days, I would consider drawing my letters on paper as a loose empirical study on an idea or set of lines.

On one end of the spectrum, the notion of a complete sketch on paper traced over in fineliner and then carried out on a wall with exactitude can sometimes feel a little limited. Although, this was at a time the only way I knew. I personally prefer to see seminal ideas with all the human imperfection.

The best pieces I see and strive for myself can look like they were hard work, are painted as best as the person can, done with an effortless appearance, but with a touch of 'perfection in imperfection' that constant forward development naturally provides. So often, writers get caught up in the 'wow' factor of a flashy piece without personalized substance that is not much more than an amalgamation of other styles and can tend to totally overlook others' solid quieter contributions to the tradition. Obviously, you want writers to appreciate your stuff, but not at the cost of the fun had with moving forward with your own interpretation of letters.

Having just enough on paper allows the recent developments to be put up stress-free and allows for a little unforeseen progression and the unexpected to happen.

To the other extreme, complete freestyling can run me out of fresh ideas and also run the risk of creating personal mediocrity within a piece.

In summation, in an issue of IGT, P.H.A.S.E 2 pointed out something to the effect of: "800,000 people out there are great at drawing, but what we do is different, it's about piecing beyond the piece you pieced."

So....., I was really looking forward to my good friends Dabs and Myla visiting.

The first afternoon they arrived we pumped out some freestyle silvers for the sport of it. It's enjoyable with these guys as it's a team effort, not just painting your own piece.

Knowing they were visiting, the previous weeks were spent putting my left hand to can control practice in anticipation of getting to do a nice production together, but......

I managed to injure my back packing up my paint for the production, and got trapped on my apartment floor. So instead, they kindly became nurses for a day or so and then got me off to a doctor. Fortunately they managed to get pieces done with what little time they had left, which made me feel better about the ordeal. They also discovered the brilliance of Speculoos spread in my pantry.

Good times with Mio.

Had to be a south paw of late, still at least another month of not using my right arm. It's been a fun challenge trying to draw and paint.

The nice folks Dabs and Myla are in town, and it's always a blast to hang out and paint together. Although I did my whole piece with Mio, we shared duties with these silver pieces above and to everyones benefit I managed to skip the difficult lines. More ambidextrous action to come.

Fast, (not Sofles fast, but fast for an old bloke fast) piece today.
Back from San Francisco, but brought back some of the fog in my bg. Combined with a topical Victor Moscoso like color palette. I've been wanting to introduce more metallics than just silver, so I used some metallic blue and beige today. Great coverage and control and looking forward to further experiments, (check the crew piece, arrows, shines etc.)

A homeless guy lent me his stool to reach the top of my piece, while the rest of my new found homeless friends sung praises, shot up, got naked, drank malt liquor , and generally partied and enjoyed watching us paint the street they live on. Nice enough bunch with some sad history.

It was a pleasure to meet the talented Til and Paul from Berlin and to have the Vagabundos in the show. Ephameron broke out some of her watercolors, providing something different for her local peers and audience.

Im not the biggest fan of writing on canvas but in a gallery setting I usually still like to express myself via letters, so I make these paper cut pieces that show the depth we see in our letters. It suits my sense of accuracy, makes me contemplate my outlines more, tests my patience / endurance and makes me feel like a kid cutting and pasting, anyway ..

The above is something I just typed for my Flickr page.

So...., ok, I am thankful and happy to be in a show of this calibre, I am not figurative, and my work doesn't speak the same language as most punters at street art shows read/speak, so it will be interesting to hear how it's perceived. Looking forward to it..

Mio suggested I try a rounded W. So I did a complete sketch on paper. On this adventure I tried to integrate the orbital paths to become more of an integral part of the letters. This one feels like a stripped back piece, a little less fuss going on. It's been good fun painting with Mio of late. We have a couple more rough ideas in the woodwork, to further combine our stuff.

TAME DMA PBP

Today I saw a recent piece from my old writing partner Tame on the web. Great to see him getting out for a paint, so I stole a few of these flix to repost mixed with a couple of my own. The top 3 are from the last few years and the bottom 2 from 89.

A lot of the modern tricks, abstractions, fill in fading out of the outline etc that you see in todays pieces he had explored in the early 90's. I don't have any scanned flix sorry, I'm sure plenty of Aussies have them though.

The wildstyles he did then where full of stories and symbolism with the emotions therein intertwined in the rhythm of the letters. He used 3d glasses to design pieces, that could also be viewed with 3d glasses. He did a bunch of pieces that looked like gnarled trees, I could go on....

BOMB THE PLANET GRAFFITI WALL

Wonende in Nottingham (UK), is al 25 jaar lang actief in de graffitiscene. Tot nu toe kan men zijn werk bewonderen in zijn eigen stad.

Hij zag een aantal garages waar kleurrijke pieces op gespoten waren. Kort daarna begon hij zijn eigen design te ontwerpen. Zijn liefde voor graffiti begon pas echt te groeien na de documentaire ‘Style Wars’ .

Naast zijn eigen werk, represent hij de Heavy Artillery Crew. Een crew waar de ideeën en manier van denken vaak overeenkomen.
Alert zegt zelf het volgende over Heavy Artillery: “The dedication, the discipline, the work ethic – it’s all about the quality, not necessarily the quantity, but I think we have a good balance of both.”

Mr. Wany, Heavy Artillery

Andrea Sergio, geboren in Brindisi (IT) en sinds zijn 12e jaar al bekend als Wany. Hij is internationaal bekend en werd gevraagd in landen zoals Kroatië, Duitsland, Engeland, België, Nederland, Spanje en de Verenigde Staten.

Dat hij ook zeer actief is op commercieel gebied, blijkt uit zijn werk dat gecreëerd is voor multinationals zoals Nike, Adidas, Coca Cola, D&G, Eastpack en MTV.

Twesh, Heavy Artillery

De Italiaanse schrijver komt origineel uit Perugia (IT), maar woont nu in Londen (UK). Hij schrijft sinds de jaren ’90 is in zijn eigen stad begonnen. Hij verhuisde naar Bologna (IT) en op deze manier groeide hij op met graffiti in beide steden.

Twesh is nu zeer actief in Londen en volgens hem is er toch een groot verschil tussen Londen en Perugia of Bologna. In Italie kende hij de wegen als de achterkant van zijn broekzak, maar Londen is een veel grotere stad. Toch weet hij nu zijn talenten te showen in Londen.

Skil, Top Dogs

Skil, een graffiti-artiest uit Zweden, begon met schrijven in de jaren `80. In zijn omgeving waren er veel mensen die zich ermee bezig hielden. Zijn motivatie was dan ook niet voor niks om beter en creatiever te zijn dan de rest.

In 1997 werd Top Dogs opgericht, mede dankzij Skil. Een van de weinige crews die constant is gebleven in de graffiti cultuur. Top Dogs is een belangrijke crew voor de Scandinavische graffiti scene.

Kaos, Top Dogs

Kaos is een graffitischrijver uit Zweden en paint al 20 jaar lang. Sinds de dag dat hij begonnen is, heeft hij de drang gehad om te schrijven en dat al 20 jaar lang.

Naast het vertegenwoordigen van zijn eigen pieces, represent hij zijn crew Top Dogs. Sterker nog; ook Kaos mag zich vol trots een medeoprichter noemen.

Soap2, AEP & 312

Soap2 komt oorspronkelijk uit Minneapolis, Minnesota en verhuisde in 2000 naar Madrid. Hij was altijd al geïnteresseerd in graffiti, voornamelijk letters. Maar in 2000 begon hij zelf met schrijven en hij was gelijk ‘verslaafd’. Na vele stijlen geprobeerd te hebben, kwam er een stijl veel terug; ‘arrows’. Nu probeert hij van alles te schrijven en beperkt zich niet tot alleen maar letters. Soap2 is een member van twee verschillende crews; AEP en 312. AEP is een Spaanse crew en bestaat uit goede vrienden die vooral schrijven op legale graffitimuren en besteden hier veel aandacht aan. 312 is crew uit Noord-Amerika die helaas niet meer actief is, maar Soap2 represent de crew tot de dag van vandaag.

Sket, AEP & TPL & WFS

Deze graffiti-artiest komt uit Spanje en is in 1998 begonnen met schrijven. Hij kwam door zijn neven in contact met graffiti. Zij waren namelijk heel actief in de hiphopscene; bboys die ook aan het sprayen waren. Hij begon zelf letters te tekenen en nadat hij genoeg zelfvertrouwen had gecreëerd, kwam zijn naam steeds meer tevoorschijn op straat. In 2000 ontmoette hij zijn eerste groep vrienden en schrijvers; Wall Fighters or Waffles werden zij genoemd en Sket leerde daar hoe hij zijn kunsten kon laten zien op legale muren. Hiernaast behoort hij tot de crew TPL; een mix van ‘bombers; train heads en legale graffitimuren. AEP heeft Sket kort geleden verwelkomd in de crew. Deze crew is klein, maar zeer hecht en richt zich voornamelijk op grote producties waar ze soms hele dagen aan werken.

Step In The Arena 2011

Step In The Arena 2011’. The largest graffiti festival in the Netherlands. It will take place on the 9th and 10th of July in Eindhoven. This year with a special side event: Hidden Beauty, an international street-art event.

Step In The Arena took place in 2010 for the first time and several thousands of people came to visit. This year more than 200 local and international graffiti gladiators will show their skills in the weekend of 9 and 10 juli in thé street-art arena of Europe: ‘de Berenkuil’. Some names of artists are:

Hidden Beauty.
This year Step In The Arena has a special side event: Hidden Beauty. The first edition of this international street art event takes place on July 8, 9 and 10 in the old Schellens textile factory. The outside walls and the sluice room of this characteristic factory are the decor. Hidden Beauty is an initiative of Niels Wildenberg (Wildenberg mode) and Emil van der Wijst (Decofiti), in collaboriaton with Dynamo.

Besides some local heroes the line up of Hidden Beauty exists of the international street art elite, coming to Eindhoven especially for this event. The work made by these artists are specifically designed for this location and go beyond traditional graffiti. They work both two and three-dimensional and there is the possibility to buy artwork and merchandise.

Climbed around on some scaffolding at a jam today at a place starting with L (I think?) in the north of Holland. Sorry , it was a bit of a tired rush. Not the best weather driving up there, but it improved a tad and provided Mister an idea for the direction for our pieces.

My old buddy Cure from Australia was one of the first train writers I met around 25 years ago. He was both a skater and writer. You wouldn't see him for a while when off skating and then he would come back and not just pick up from where he left off but casually bring something new and interesting. Same applies these days. He's physically quite detached from the daily going ons of writing, he can take a 15- 20 year break, then make it look effortless and bring it like he never stopped!

The revolution will not be televised.

Two days in a row not knowing what to paint. The first afternoon I did a simple fun thing. My initial photo was taken in poor light, so I went back the next morning, and winged another piece while I was there.
Having 'nothing', so to speak, made me rely on my past (which is a way too common practice for me). I remembered something I wrote next to a piece as a teen, "go about your own thing, fuck competition and being a king". Ok, it's teenish, but 20+ years on it has become a more important notion than ever, as keeping up with the Jones's, fa fa fa fashion in writing and self promotion plays too vital a role. Give me writers with a personal set of images / symbols and their empirical studies that I can follow. Then I have the means to critique without the haze. Anyway...

The Benelux Writers Convention

About 100 writers from the Benelux region got together for a jam on Saturday. Perfect weather and a really good grassroots event. I finished as the sun went down and managed to grab a beer at the bar and a few quick shots of a small portion of the walls done.

For my part, I freestyled this with whatever paint I could scrape up, and luckily had enough of a color range in my bag to get away with it. A friend and I where discussing approach to style, technique, what to put into a piece or more importantly, what to leave out. He broke out a musical analogy, (which I'm always down for). If his painting technique was akin to Pavement's musicianship, mine was similar to Akron/Family. It's for one, a nice compliment, and secondly it's nice to know someone else sees in a similar way to yourself what you're attempting to do.

We painted fast and digressed a little from the 70's / psychedelic theme. My E was a nod to old psychedelic poster art, and the pink fill in it is the chemical diagram for acid.

I often think about writing's ability as an art form to be as expressive, human and as profound as other art forms demand to be treated. I also ask myself a few questions regarding writer's abstraction of letter based graffiti to reach a larger audience, development both creatively and career wise versus deeper exploration of letterform and making a stand for our art form in the gallery space. But, hey, I'm not going to bore you with that.....Instead...

I found a little section from Jean-Pierre Criqui and from Roland Barthes in 1973, The Responsibility of Forms, that partially covers some ground for me...

Psychedelic (feel free to insert the word graffiti) design, which sometimes verged on a kind of cryptology, was of course dependent on establishing an identity that immediately distanced itself from prevailing social and cultural codes: the poster for an event or happening couldn't easily be deciphered by any old square, and from the outset was designed to appeal to a specific community. But, beyond this rejection of the principles of mass marketing, a new reappraisal of the modern concept of the arts and of the conventional relationship between text and image was taking shape.

Roland Barthes in his discussion of an anthropomorphic alphabet designed by Erté:

'Graphic (again, feel free to insert graffiti instead) art, if we can shake off our society's empiricist yoke, which reduces language to a simple instrument of communication, should be the major art which transcends the futile opposition of figurative and of abstract: for a letter, at one and the same time, means and means nothing, imitates nothing and yet symbolizes, dismisses both the alibi of realism and that of aestheticism.'

If you do big pieces at this spot, trouble is you need 3 or 4 photo stitches done. (the swing on the N is at least around 3 metres long and could do with it's own photo at this spot).

I'm a bad photographer at the best of times. These were taken just as the sun rose over the horizon. So, excuse the graininess and big thanks to my patient photo shop owning stitching friend!!!!!

Somewhere between experimenting with tradition and moving forward.

I had all these big ideas of trying out new things for 2011. But, as usual iI took a big bag of paint winged it and waited to see what would happen. I painted quite different fills (for me) but proceeded to go over them straight away. It's got some 80's 3d stuff floating away, and crop circles, and orbital paths, a bit of both worlds i guess.

Nice street name!

All my collages are first done as a piece on a wall or wherever. They are then made later, using colored papers. With the above Hitachi, I saw a lot of gold and silver Christmas decorative paper in shops and thought it would look good as a classic Melbourne train instead!

The paper works having being built up in layers give a small indication of how I ( or...writers in general) perceive 3d in my ( or our) pieces that we paint on walls as 2d representations.

The flying saucer is loosely based on a BMW design from Germany, which they built around the mid 40's (minus a disco light inside!!).

I sourced the wood etc to construct it from the local hard rubbish collection. Fortunately I arrived in Mannheim the night everyone put their old cupboards , beds, lamps etc on the street. I spent the first night lugging smashed apart furnishings through the area.

Luckily I found a work bench in the street. I only brought with me a jigsaw, posca, hammer and nails. The other wood elements on the walls and framing for 2 pieces was also found in the hood.

This was a fun wall after our main seperate walls were completed.

It was nice to see Ephameron work on an unfamiliar scale and materials. Us Aussies and Americans are more used to complex technique, loud and high detail work. This quiet, less is more approach to her illustrations, I feel, helped her work stand out. Intimate but large scale.

Ephameron and I arrived a few days early in Miami for a bit of well deserved r&r before getting painting. She's got a mural tee'd up and I'm painting with the writers thanks to our good mates Dabs and Myla, and their pal Typoe.

There is a ton of great artists on the line up, lots of stuff going on around the city for Art Basel. Looking forward, sus out the artists list 2010 on the site.
